About Laura
I am a graphic designer in transition. I love type, image, layout — making meaningful visual communications and interactions. I studied graphic design, print making and fine art at university. And now, this chapter of my life is a synthesis of art, design and writing.
My first design job was editorial and advertising design as art director for a weekly newspaper, the Seattle Weekly. I have been a digital design pioneer and enjoy the experience of knowing the craft of creating a page design before computers. I played a critical role in the creation of PageMaker and the early tools for graphic design at Aldus and Adobe. I designed user experiences for early web sites and mobile applications before they were constrained by templates and themes. We created from a loose sketch as a starting point. We learned the concept of non-linear design with hyperlinks when Apple introduced Hypercard and the new “WorldWideWeb”.
After Adobe, I launched my design consultancy Laura Urban Perry Design for brand, UX, web and all manner of visual communications for over 15 years, and then a dynamic partnership with Laura Ware followed as we formed Flying Crow Creative – our branding and marketing firm. Winning Webbys, Daveys and fostering wonderful creative collaborations and friendships all along the way.
Today, I am enjoying the experience of making again, directly with my hands as well as with a digital devices. What a treat!
